Alex Ovechkin Breaks NHL All-Time Goals Record

Today April 6, 2025, Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals made NHL history by scoring his 895th career goal, surpassing Wayne Gretzky's long-standing record. 

Ovechkin's Record-Breaking Goal

During a matchup against the New York Islanders at UBS Arena, Ovechkin netted his historic goal on a power play in the second period. Receiving a precise pass from longtime teammate Tom Wilson, Ovechkin unleashed his signature one-timer from the left circle, beating goaltender Ilya Sorokin. The game paused to honor the achievement, with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, Wayne Gretzky, and Ovechkin's family participating in the on-ice ceremony.

Gretzky's Previous Record

Wayne Gretzky had held the NHL's all-time goals record since March 23, 1994, when he scored his 802nd goal, surpassing Gordie Howe. Gretzky achieved this feat during a game against the Vancouver Canucks, solidifying his legacy as "The Great One." Gordie Howe held the NHL record for most career goals from 1963 to 1994, when Wayne Gretzky surpassed him, a span of 31 years. Now another 31 years later, the record has been reset by Ovi.

Comparing Two Legends

Both Ovechkin and Gretzky reached their goal-scoring records in 1,487 games over 20 NHL seasons, underscoring their consistent excellence and longevity in the sport. While Gretzky remains the all-time leader in assists and points, Ovechkin's goal-scoring prowess has set a new benchmark for future generations.

He’s still got gas in the tank. The 39-year-old isn’t slowing down—he's still putting up numbers, still delivering clutch goals, and still leading by example.
